Private bank onboarding: why tax evidence matters

What happened

Speaking at the Wealth Management Institute's Global-Asia Family Office Summit on 5 October 2026, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong highlighted Singapore's enhanced wealth management supervisory framework.
In parallel, the Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS) and MAS released updated private banking AML/CFT industry guidelines:
  • Source of Wealth (SoW) corroboration: banks must obtain independent tax filings, audited financial statements, or transaction closing documents to substantiate wealth origins.
  • Tax compliance due diligence: private banks must verify that assets transferred to Singapore have met all tax filing and disclosure obligations in clients' home jurisdictions.
  • Ongoing monitoring: automated screening of corporate registry filings, beneficial ownership registers and overseas tax transparency reports.

Why it matters

Opening accounts with Singapore private banks and custodian institutions has become significantly more rigorous.
Merely providing bank reference letters or unverified declarations of wealth is no longer sufficient. High-net-worth individuals and family offices must present comprehensive historical tax evidence to complete onboarding and avoid freezing of funds.

What to do now

  • Prepare a comprehensive Source of Wealth dossier before initiating private bank onboarding for family principals or trust structures.
  • Assemble historical tax returns, dividend vouchers, business sale agreements and inheritance documents with certified translations.
  • Engage qualified tax counsel to provide tax residency and compliance memorandums where complex cross-border structures are involved.
